The last days of the Maid of Orléans
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
On May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc is burned alive at the Place du Vieux-Marché in Rouen. She is 19 years old. Five centuries later, the streets of Rouen still bear the memory of her trial, her prison, and her execution. Follow her traces — and prove her innocence.
The Place du Vieux-Marché is a peaceful place today — café terraces, a covered market, a modern church with flame-shaped curves. But on May 30, 1431, ten thousand people crowded here to watch a 19-year-old girl burn who had turned the tide of the Hundred Years' War. Joan of Arc, condemned for heresy by an ecclesiastical court manipulated by the English, climbed the pyre asking for a cross. Your investigation retraces her last days in Rouen — from dungeon to pyre — to find the evidence of the conspiracy that condemned her.

« "Bishop, I die because of you." »— — Joan of Arc to Pierre Cauchon, May 30, 1431
Captured at Compiègne on May 23, 1430, by the Burgundians, Joan of Arc is sold to the English for 10,000 livres. She is transferred to Rouen, the English capital in France, and imprisoned in the keep of Philippe Auguste's castle — the tower that bears her name today. The trial begins in January 1431, led by Bishop Pierre Cauchon, an ambitious prelate loyal to the English cause.
The trial is a legal farce. Joan, alone against dozens of theologians, responds with an intelligence and courage that confound her judges. When asked if she is in a state of grace, she replies: "If I am not, may God put me there; if I am, may God keep me there." An answer so perfect that the clerks note the judges' astonishment.
Condemned for heresy and wearing men's clothing, Joan is burned alive on May 30, 1431, at the Place du Vieux-Marché. The executioner would later claim her heart did not burn. Twenty-five years later, a rehabilitation trial overturns the conviction. In 1920, Joan is canonized — the "witch" becomes the patron saint of France.
