Durandal, Roland and the sacred cliff
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Built into a vertical cliff, Rocamadour holds Durandal — Roland's legendary sword — and a miraculous Black Madonna. 216 steps, seven chapels, a castle at the summit. France's most vertiginous pilgrimage hides a secret in the rock.
Rocamadour is one of France's most extraordinary sites — a village clinging to a 120-meter cliff, topped by a sanctuary and a castle. The Grand Staircase of 216 steps links the lower street to the forecourt of seven chapels, which pilgrims climbed on their knees. In the Chapel of Notre-Dame, a 12th-century Black Madonna has performed miracles for nine centuries. And in the rock above the portal, a sword is thrust: Durandal, Roland's sword.

« "Roland feels death taking him entirely. He tries to break Durandal against the rock. The sword does not break." »— — The Song of Roland, 11th century
In 1166, a perfectly preserved body was discovered beneath the threshold of the Notre-Dame chapel. It was identified as Saint Amadour — a legendary hermit said to have been Zacchaeus, the publican of the Gospel. Miracles multiplied, and Rocamadour became one of the four great pilgrimages of Christendom, alongside Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela. Kings, popes, and saints made the climb.
The Black Madonna, a 12th-century Romanesque sculpture in walnut wood, is the object of devotion. Darkened by centuries of wax and incense, she is credited with hundreds of miracles. Above the chapel portal, a sword is embedded in the rock: according to legend, it is Durandal, Roland's sword, which the Archangel Michael hurled from Roncevaux to keep it safe from the Saracens.
The Grand Staircase of 216 steps is the pilgrimage's heart. Penitents climbed it on their knees, reciting a Hail Mary at each step. At the top, the seven chapels open onto a forecourt suspended over the void. The Crypt of Saint-Amadour, beneath the basilica, contains the saint's tomb — and perhaps other secrets the cliff has not yet yielded.

The gameplay: AR, camera, hidden clues
At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. The stops on your route are a surprise. You'll discover them one by one, guided by your phone, starting from the meeting point.
