The rise and fall of a maritime empire
Founded in 1293 by Raden Wijaya, Majapahit quickly became the dominant power in Southeast Asia. Under the reign of King Hayam Wuruk and the vision of his Prime Minister Gajah Mada in the 14th century, the empire reached its zenith. Gajah Mada's famous 'Palapa Oath' vowed to unite the Nusantara archipelago under Majapahit's rule, an achievement almost realized thanks to a powerful navy and a flourishing trade network. Trowulan, its capital, was then a cosmopolitan metropolis, vibrant with culture, art, and unique red brick architecture.
However, after Hayam Wuruk's death in 1389, the empire was torn apart by succession conflicts and civil wars, notably the Paregreg War (1401-1406). The rise of Islamic sultanates and socio-economic upheavals contributed to its gradual decline. Trowulan, once a glorious capital, was eventually abandoned, overgrown by vegetation and sediments, its splendors buried and forgotten for centuries, giving rise to the myth of the 'submerged capital'.
