The Keweenaw Peninsula in northern Michigan was, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the scene of intense copper mining, making Michigan one of the world's leading producers. The conflict lasted over nine months, marked by violence, evictions from company housing, and intense community polarization. The tragic climax was the Italian Hall fire on Christmas Eve 1913, where 73 people, including 59 children of strikers, perished in a deadly stampede, an event whose responsibilities remain controversial and left a deep scar on American labor history.
