For over a century, the Tampico fortress stood as a beacon of Spanish
« I have always been a free man and I will die free in these Mexican waters. »— Jean Lafitte, letter to his men, 1829
From 1682, French buccaneers used Tamaulipas lagoons as refuges. The Lafitte brothers, Pierre and Jean, dominated Gulf of Mexico piracy from New Orleans. In 1817, Jean Lafitte founded Campeche on Galveston Island, a true corsair republic that defied nascent American authority. His ships intercepted Spanish galleons loaded with silver from Potosí.
Driven from Galveston in 1821 by the American navy, Jean Lafitte took refuge in newly independent Mexico. He established his final base in Tampico in 1829, where he died under mysterious circumstances. His scattered men allegedly hid an immense treasure in the meanders of Laguna Madre. Legend or reality, treasure hunters still roam the Tamaulipas coasts today.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, fewer tourists, gorgeous light. Summer is also great but go for early morning before 11 or late afternoon. Winter is perfectly playable, especially in southern cities — Waterfront and colonial district of Tampico often feels more authentic then.
