On March 18, 1938, President Lázaro Cárdenas announced the expropriation of all foreign companies. This revolutionary nationalization created PEMEX, Mexico's national oil company. The United States boycotted Mexican oil, but war-torn Europe bought the production. Tampico lost its status as the world's oil capital, but Mexico regained its energy sovereignty.
