Silver, Conquest, and Colonial Riches

Zacatecas exists due to the discovery of rich mineral deposits in 1546 by Spanish explorer Juan de Tolosa. He, along with Cristóbal de Oñate, Diego de Ibarra, and Baltasar Temiño de Bañuelos, are considered the city's founders. The region was known to indigenous peoples for its mineral wealth. A formal mining camp, initially called Minas de Nuestra Señora de Remedios, was established in 1548. By the late 16th century, Zacatecas was second only to Mexico City in importance. Its mines produced wealth for the Spanish Crown. By the early 18th century, Zacatecas produced one-fifth of the world's silver. This prosperity led to a population peak of 40,000 in 1732. The city's architecture, characterized by ornate Baroque facades crafted from pink quarry stone, reflects this era of wealth and Spanish colonial influence.

From Revolution to Modernity

The 19th century brought turbulence to Zacatecas, marked by battles during Mexico's fight for independence. A significant event in the city's history was the Battle of Zacatecas in 1914, a pivotal moment in the Mexican Revolution. Francisco Villa's forces captured the city during this conflict, an event still commemorated today. While silver mining remains an important industry, Zacatecas has also developed into an agricultural center, known for grains, sugarcane, and beverages like rum, pulque, and mezcal. The city's colonial core, with its preserved urban design from the 16th century and subsequent 18th and 19th-century developments, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

• —Zacatecas Cathedral — This 18th-century Baroque building stands on the Plaza de Armas. Its facade displays intricate carvings, blending European and indigenous decorative elements in pink stone.
• —Palacio de la Mala Noche — An 18th-century mansion, this white building is named after the Mala Noche mine, owned by its original inhabitant, Don Manuel de Retegui. It once served as the Municipal Assembly and now houses the Judicial Building.
• —Cubo Aqueduct — A section of the colonial aqueduct system that once supplied water to the city. Its arches stand against the urban landscape.
• —Cerro de la Bufa — This hill offers views of Zacatecas. Take the cable car (Teleférico) for an ascent. At its summit, you will find the Monument to the Taking of Zacatecas, commemorating the 1914 battle, and the Mausoleum of Illustrious People.
• —Former convent of San Francisco — This 17th-century convent offers a view into the city's colonial past.
• —El Eden Mine — Operating from 1586 until 1960, this former silver and gold mine is now a tourist attraction. Visitors can take a train into the mine and explore its tunnels, which also house a museum of rocks and minerals and an underground nightclub.
• —Jardín Juárez — A public garden, offering a green space in the city center.
• —Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno) — On the east side of Plaza de Armas, this 18th-century building, once a colonial family home, now houses government offices. Inside, a mural by Antonio Rodríguez depicts the history of Zacatecas.
• —González Ortega Market — This iron-columned building from the 1880s was once the city's main market. After a fire in 1901, it was rebuilt in 1902 and now houses shops, cafes, and restaurants.

The best time to visit Zacatecas for weather is from late March through late October, avoiding the brief dip in conditions in late March. Spring and early summer (April to June) offer dry, warm days with clear skies, while fall brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. May is the hottest month, with average highs around 26°C (79°F), and January is the coldest, with lows around 1°C (33°F). The wet season runs from June to September, with July being the wettest month, averaging 131 mm of rain. Rain usually comes as late-afternoon thunderstorms, leaving mornings clear for sightseeing. Avoid visiting during the peak of the rainy season if afternoon showers disrupt your plans, or during the Feria Nacional in the first two weeks of September when crowds and prices surge.

Zacatecas International Airport (ZCL), also known as General Leobardo C. Ruiz International Airport, is about 17-18 kilometers (11 miles) north of the city center. A taxi from the airport to the city takes approximately 21 minutes and costs around $500–650 MXN. Zacatecas is a hilly city, but the historic center is walkable. The city's narrow, cobbled streets are part of its character. For longer distances, taxis are available. Public transportation options like local buses also serve various parts of the city. The Mercado González Ortega, a historic market, is open daily from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
