Your journey begins in Battle, in front of the imposing Battle Abbey Gatehouse, built in the 13th century. This gate, 18m wide with its two drum towers, served as the abbey's final defensive structure until its dissolution in 1538. Restored in 1818 by Benjamin Wyatt, it now houses English Heritage visitor facilities since 1922. Here you receive your first instructions, the stone walls whispering secrets of Battle Abbey's founding by William the Conqueror in 1070, as penance for the Battle of Hastings casualties.
As you proceed onto High Street, Battle, you traverse a medieval market street that developed post-1066. It is lined with timber-framed buildings from the 14th-16th centuries, including 15th-century Wealden hall houses like the Almonry (c. 1400), originally part of Battle Abbey's outer court. This street is also the site of the annual Battle of Hastings re-enactment since 1984, an event drawing 20,000 visitors, immersing you in the era's vibrancy.
The path then leads you to Senlac Hill, the site of the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. Historically known as 'the hoary apple tree', this 32-hectare hilltop was where King Harold's army, positioned with a shield wall, was attacked uphill by William's Norman forces. Excavations from 1994-2003 uncovered 10th-11th century coins and arrowheads, confirming the precise location of this pivotal battlefield in English history.
Continuing your exploration, you pass Battle Abbey Pond, an artificial lake created around 1200 by damming. This 2-hectare body of water, up to 4m deep, was crucial for the abbey's water supply and fish farming. Remnants of medieval sluice gates are still visible, testament to the monks' ingenuity in sustaining the abbey until its 1538 dissolution. This English Heritage site, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, echoes with local legends.
Your journey concludes on the grounds of Battle Abbey itself, where the abbey church, approximately 80m in length, had its high altar positioned on the very spot where King Harold is said to have fallen. The ruins, managed by English Heritage since 1922, and the 1,400 square meter cloister garth, allow you to grasp the scale of this monument, part of the UNESCO tentative list. From its founding by William the Conqueror in 1070 to its dissolution by Henry VIII in 1538, Battle is a landmark of southeast England's heritage, continuing to tell its story.
