The Sierra Minera: when lead was worth gold
The mines of the Sierra de Cartagena-La Unión had been worked since Roman times, but it was in the 19th century that mining fever transformed the region. In 1840, the discovery of new silver and lead seams attracted thousands of workers. Colossal fortunes were built in a single generation.
Between 1890 and 1920, Cartagena was covered in Art Nouveau palaces. Architect Víctor Beltrí, trained in Barcelona, designed dozens of facades adorned with ceramics, wrought iron and stained glass. The Casino, Palacio Aguirre, Casa Maestre rivalled the finest buildings of Barcelona's Eixample.
But the seams ran dry. The 1929 crisis finished what overexploitation had begun. The palaces emptied, the mines closed. It was only in the early 21st century that the city undertook to restore its Art Nouveau jewels, rediscovering in their ornaments the clues to a mad era.
