📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
King Gradlon's statue sits between the spires of Quimper's cathedral. Legend says that whoever drinks from his sacred horn will know the truth about the city of Ys. The horn has never been found.
Quimper, historic capital of Breton Cornouaille, is dominated by the twin spires of its Gothic cathedral. Between them, the equestrian statue of King Gradlon — sovereign of the legendary city of Ys — has watched for centuries. Each year, during the Feast of Saint-Corentin, a man climbed to the statue to offer it a glass of wine and drink to its health. But Gradlon's sacred horn — the one that reveals truth — has vanished. Your quest: find it.
« "Quimper is the most pleasant city in Brittany. You feel the Middle Ages at every street corner." »— — Gustave Flaubert, "Par les champs et par les grèves," 1847
Quimper — "Kemper" in Breton, meaning "confluence" — was born at the meeting point of the Odet and the Steir rivers. Capital of the County of Cornouaille, it was the residence of Breton kings and bishops for centuries. Its Cathédrale Saint-Corentin, a masterpiece of Breton Gothic, houses between its spires the equestrian statue of King Gradlon, placed there in the 15th century.
The tradition of "King Gradlon's horn" dates back to the Middle Ages. Each year, during the patron saint's feast, a man scaled the cathedral façade to the statue, offered it a glass of wine, drank to its health, then threw the glass into the crowd. Whoever caught it without breaking it enjoyed a year of good luck.
Historic Quimper, with its medieval half-timbered streets, flower-decked bridges over the Odet, and its atmosphere of an art city, retains a unique charm. Mont Frugy, a wooded hill in the heart of the city, was according to tradition an ancient druidic worship site from which one commanded a view of all Cornouaille.
