Chan Santa Cruz — The Last Maya Stronghold

Your journey begins in Mérida's Plaza Grande, founded in 1542 on pre-Columbian Maya markets. This 12,000 m² square was the scene of crucial gatherings during the Caste War (1847-1901), a rebellion that started nearby in Valladolid. Parque Francisco Cantón Rosado, the plaza's official name, honors the governor from 1843 to 1846, whose decisions preceded the unrest. Right next door, the Catedral de San Ildefonso, whose construction began in 1559 and was completed in 1598, is the first cathedral built on the American continent. With its 60 meters in length and 20-meter high towers, its Renaissance style with baroque elements asserts Spanish power. The Casa de Montejo, built in 1549 by Francisco de Montejo 'el Mozo', the conquistador founder of Mérida, confronts you directly with colonial ideology. Now a museum, this palace is an anchor point in the colonial era that preceded the Caste War of 1847. Continuing towards the Palacio Municipal de Mérida, built between 1738 and 1746, you discover the former seat of the colonial ayuntamiento. Its baroque facade and 28-meter-long arcade witnessed crucial administrative decisions during the Caste War unrest. Renovated in 1923, it dominates the Plaza Grande and embodies the institutions that sought to contain or crush the rebellion. The route also takes you to Calle 60, a pedestrian street paved since the 19th century, lined with colonial buildings reflecting post-Caste War architecture, a commercial and cultural center rebuilt after the conflict.

Your exploration will lead you to Valladolid, where Cenote Zací, a sacred Maya site 42 m in diameter, was the location of the initial proclamation of the State of the Cross in 1849, a key moment in the resistance.
