From Maya settlement to Spanish stronghold

Campeche's story begins with the Maya settlement known as Ah Kim Pech, on the Gulf of Mexico coast. This location made it a center for trade and cultural exchange. The Spanish arrived in 1517, and the city of San Francisco de Campeche was founded in 1540 by Francisco de Montejo y León "El Mozo." It became the first major Spanish settlement on the Yucatán Peninsula and a port for the Spanish Crown, important for the conquest and evangelization of the Yucatán Peninsula, Guatemala, and Chiapas.

A Walled City Against Pirates

Campeche's role as a trading port, exporting logwood, attracted pirates throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The city was sacked by the corsair Mansvelt in 1663 and by Laurens de Graaf in 1685. To counter these attacks, the Spanish Crown funded the construction of a defensive system. Between 1686 and 1704, an irregular hexagonal wall, approximately 2.5 kilometers long, was built around the city. This system included eight bastions, each named after a saint. Seven of the original eight bastions remain today, along with sections of the wall and the Land and Sea Gates. The Land Gate, opened in 1732, is preserved in its original form. The Sea Gate was reconstructed in 1957 after being demolished in 1893 to open the city to the sea. This defensive architecture, an example of military engineering in the Caribbean, led to the Historic Fortified Town of Campeche being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

• —Campeche City Walls and Bastions — Walk along sections of the city walls, which stretch for over 2 kilometers. These walls are built from thick limestone blocks, standing 8 meters high and 6 meters wide. Explore the seven remaining bastions, such as Baluarte de San Carlos, which houses the City Museum, or Baluarte de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, the largest bastion, originally designed to support the Sea Gate.
• —Land Gate (Puerta de Tierra) — This gate, from 1732, was the main entrance to the walled city. It retains features including gunships, gunpowder storage, embrasures, and machicolations. In the evenings, a light and sound show presents the city's history.
• —Sea Gate (Puerta de Mar) — The current gate is a 1957 reconstruction. It marks the historical connection between the walled city and the wharf and offers views towards the Gulf of Mexico.
• —Campeche Cathedral (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción) — On the east side of the main square, this Baroque-style cathedral with Neoclassical details was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. A chapel has been on this site since 1540. Its façade was kept sober. Inside, there are colonial-era paintings, sculpted altars, and an 18th-century silver tabernacle.
• —Calle 59 — This street was a trade route within the walled city. It has colorful colonial facades and represents the city's preserved architectural heritage.
• —Alameda Park — A green space that offers respite and often features local life and events. It is a place to observe daily routines outside the more visited areas.
• —San Román Square — This square contains the San Román Church, which houses the Black Christ statue, a religious icon for the local community. The square is active during the Feria de San Román in September.
• —Campeche Waterfront (Malecón) — A promenade along the Gulf of Mexico, used for evening strolls and sunsets. It offers a different view of the city's coastal setting.

Campeche has a tropical climate, warm all year. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to March. Temperatures are comfortable, humidity is low, and there is little rain, making it suitable for outdoor activities. February hosts the Carnaval de Campeche, a local festival.

Avoid the rainy season, from June to October, with September being the wettest month. Showers are often brief afternoon downpours, but humidity is high, and there is a risk of hurricanes from August to October. Temperatures are highest from April to May, before the rainy season, reaching averages of 34-35°C (93-95°F).

Campeche is served by Ing. Alberto Acuña Ongay International Airport (CPE), which handles domestic flights. The airport is a few kilometers from the city center. As of July 2025, a new Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) bus line, the Campeche Light Train, connects the Historic Center with the airport and the Tren Maya station. Fares are around 18 pesos for regular passengers and 9 pesos for students, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Within the walled city, walking is the best way to get around. The historic center is compact and pedestrian-friendly. Taxis are available, and local buses serve longer distances. The city's layout within the walls follows a Spanish grid. For drivers, parking is generally available outside the walled city.
