From Victor Hugo to the executed Résistants
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Victor Hugo was born here in 1802. A century and a half later, 100 Résistants were shot in Vauban's Citadel. Between these two destinies, Besançon bears the scars of History — and secrets the fortress walls have never surrendered.
Besançon is a city embraced by the Doubs river like a natural moat. At the top of the loop, Vauban's Citadel dominates everything. A masterpiece of military architecture, it served in turn as prison, barracks, and execution site. Victor Hugo was born in a house on the Grande Rue. During the Occupation, the Nazis shot Résistants there whose courage still echoes between the stone walls.

« "Freedom begins where ignorance ends." »— — Victor Hugo, born in Besançon on February 26, 1802
On February 26, 1802, Victor Hugo was born at 140 Grande Rue, in a modest house where his father, one of Napoleon's officers, was garrisoned. The child stayed only six weeks in Besançon, but he would always claim this city as his birthplace. "I am from Besançon," he wrote, forever linking his name to the city.
Vauban, Louis XIV's brilliant engineer, transformed the hill overlooking the Doubs loop into an impregnable fortress. The Citadel, built between 1668 and 1711, is considered his masterpiece. Its eleven-meter-thick walls withstood every siege.
During World War II, the Citadel became a place of horror. Between 1941 and 1944, the Nazi occupiers executed about a hundred Résistants there. Their names are engraved in stone. The Museum of Resistance and Deportation, housed in the Citadel, perpetuates their memory.
