Palembang — The Golden Charter of Srivijaya

Srivijaya, whose name means 'Glorious Victory' in Sanskrit, emerged as a major power in Southeast Asia in the 7th century. Founded by the legendary Dapunta Hyang Sri Jayanasa, this maritime and commercial empire developed around Palembang, on the island of Sumatra. Thanks to its strategic position at the heart of the Indonesian archipelago, Srivijaya controlled vital sea routes, including the Strait of Malacca and the Sunda Strait, thus becoming an essential crossroads for trade between China, India, and the Middle East. The wealth accumulated through trade allowed the empire to prosper, not only economically but also culturally, making it a flourishing center of Mahayana Buddhism.

For centuries, Srivijaya exerted considerable influence, extending its sphere of power across the Malay Peninsula and other islands of the archipelago. Its naval power was formidable, protecting its trade routes from pirates and asserting its sovereignty. However, the 11th century marked the beginning of its decline, with the invasion of the powerful Chola dynasties from South India, which weakened its maritime control. Despite attempts at resurgence, the empire was gradually eclipsed by the emergence of new Javanese kingdoms like Majapahit, and finally faded in the 14th century, leaving behind a legacy of navigation, commerce, and Buddhist piety.
