Knossos — Oracle of the Mother Goddess

Heraklion welcomes you with its national Archaeological Museum, inaugurated in 1967 after reconstruction following the 1957 earthquake. Founded in 1883, this 7000 m² exhibition sanctuary houses 4000 Minoan objects, 55% of which come directly from Knossos Palace. 5 kilometers from the museum, Knossos Palace unfolds its 20,000 m² of remains over a 30,000 m² archaeological site. Built around 2000 BC by Minoan civilization, this political and religious center of ancient Crete was definitively destroyed by an earthquake and fire around 1380 BC. Arthur Evans initiated excavations in 1900, creating from 1922 his controversial reinforced concrete reconstructions that give the site its distinctive appearance today. Listed as a protected monument by the Greek State in 1917, Knossos reveals the complex organization of a society that dominated Mediterranean trade routes.

The Royal Theatre of Knossos, built around 1700 BC, immerses you in Minoan religious ceremonies with its semi-circular tiers for 500 spectators. This 28-meter-wide structure, oriented south to catch the rising sun, was associated with mother goddess cults. Restored by Evans in 1920, this unique theatre in the eastern Mediterranean testifies to Minoan artistic sophistication. The Theatre Corridor, a 30-meter processional way dating from the 16th century BC, led to a triple sanctuary dedicated to the snake goddess, where restored frescoes still show ritual processions.

The House of the High Priest, a 17th century BC Minoan building interpreted by Evans in 1923, contains the altar of the horns of consecration, a 1.5-meter-high Minoan emblem. This religious symbol, linked to Great Mother Goddess cults, is found at all Minoan sites in Crete. Near the royal palace, the Temple-Tomb discovered in 1936 by the British School at Athens reveals a rectangular sanctuary of 25 by 12 meters, dedicated to a female deity in the 17th century BC. Its remains of a sophisticated drainage system dating from 1700 BC testify to Minoan hydraulic engineering.
