The end of the Franciscan missions
Mission Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was founded in 1774 by Father Junípero Serra in this fertile valley of the Baja California mountains. For sixty years, Franciscans evangelized the Kumeyaay tribes, developing agriculture, livestock, and crafts. Gold flowed in: donations from wealthy settlers, tributes from converted natives, land revenues. The mission became one of the most prosperous in the California mission system.
In 1834, Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna promulgated secularization laws, nationalizing all mission properties. The monks had thirty days to evacuate. Father Félix Caballero, who had arrived from Majorca in 1820, refused to surrender the accumulated treasure. He organized its dispersal according to a secret plan, carving clues into the stone and adobe of the valley's buildings. Arrested in September 1834, he died in prison without revealing the location of his caches.
