The Molokans — 'milk drinkers' — formed a Russian Orthodox sect that rejected icons, religious hierarchy, and especially military conscription. After the failed 1905 revolution, Tsar Nicholas II intensified their persecution. One hundred and five families, led by Pavel Samarin and Fyodor Belov, sold their possessions, hid part of their gold in the Siberian steppe, and departed for America with help from American pacifists.
Arriving in Los Angeles in December 1905, they were directed to Valle de Guadalupe by agents of Porfirio Díaz's Mexican government, which sought to populate Baja California. These Russian peasants, expert viticulturists for generations, planted the region's first noble European grape varieties: Grenache, Tempranillo, Mission. Their colony prospered until 1938, when President Cárdenas's land nationalization dispersed the community.
