Le Kef, a strategic city in the Tunisian hinterland, has always been a hotbed of resistance. Under the French Protectorate established in 1881, the mountainous region became a natural stronghold for the "fellagas" or maquisards, these shadow fighters who refused the occupation. From the 1930s, with the emergence of the nationalist movement and the Neo-Destour party, the struggle for independence intensified, especially after World War II. Le Kef, due to its geographical position and history as a stronghold, was a key location for clandestine organization and guerrilla operations against colonial forces.
The 1950s marked the peak of this armed and political resistance. Figures like Farhat Hached, a trade union leader assassinated in 1952, galvanized the Tunisian people.
