After the October Revolution of 1917, the Don, ancestral land of the Cossacks, became a hotbed of fierce resistance to the Bolsheviks. Under the leadership of emblematic figures like Ataman Alexei Kaledin, the Cossacks sought to preserve their autonomy and traditional way of life. On May 10, 1918, the assembly of the Don Cossacks, the Krug, proclaimed the Don Republic, an independent state entity with its own constitution and government, under the leadership of Ataman Pyotr Krasnov. This republic became a crucial stronghold of the White movement, attracting many volunteers and anti-Bolshevik fighters.
However, the strategic position of the Don and the ideological fervor of the Civil War quickly transformed the region into a bloody battlefield. Despite initial support from the Central Powers (Germany), the Don Republic was caught between the Red armies and local forces. In January 1920, Rostov-on-Don was definitively captured by the Red Army, marking the end of this ephemeral republic. The Cossacks were subjected to brutal repression, the 'de-Cossackization', and their dream of independence was relegated to the forgotten pages of history, but their spirit of freedom continues to mark the region.
