The Rooster of the East and the perfidy of treaties
The Sultanate of Gowa, a major maritime power in the Indonesian archipelago during the 17th century, challenged the trade monopoly of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Under the leadership of its 16th ruler, Sultan Hasanuddin (1631-1670), the kingdom fiercely resisted attempts at subjugation. Hasanuddin, nicknamed "Ayam Jantan dari Timur" (The Rooster of the East), waged a heroic war against the Dutch forces of Cornelis Speelman, allied with other rival Bugis and Makassar princes, notably Arung Palakka of Bone.
Despite Gowa's bravery, the combined forces of the VOC and its allies proved too powerful. Gowa's defeat led to the signing of the Treaty of Bungaya in 1667, a humiliating agreement that dismantled Gowa's commercial empire, conceded territories, and imposed the Dutch trade monopoly. Two years later, the fortified capital of Somba Opu fell, marking the end of Gowa's independence. Faced with this bitter defeat, Sultan Hasanuddin, until his last breath in 1670, sought ways to preserve his people's spirit of resistance, leaving behind clues of a hidden truth.
