Your quest begins in London, at the Temple Bar Memorial, a commemorative monument erected in 1880 by John Francis Bentley. This site marks the original location of Temple Bar, the City gate destroyed in 1878, rebuilt by Wren after the Great Fire of 1666. The 2.4-meter-high griffin's head, emblem of the City, welcomes you. It is here, at the border between the City and Westminster, that you pick up the first signals of a conspiracy dating back to the 13th century, when Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master, fought for the survival of his order.
The path then leads you to Temple Church, a round church built around 1185 by the Knights Templar, directly inspired by the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Its elongated nave, added in the 13th century, houses the tombs of nine Knights Templar, the most famous of which is that of William Marshal (1147-1219), a crusader and regent of England. In 1312, Pope Clement V, under pressure from Philip IV of France, ordered the dissolution of the order, and the church passed to the Knights Hospitaller, then to the lawyers of London's Inns of Court. Its dimensions, with a 55-meter-long nave and a 16-meter-diameter central circle, attest to the order's past grandeur in London.
Nearby, the Inner Temple Gardens, historic gardens laid out from the 14th century on former Templar lands acquired in 1346, offer a moment of respite. These gardens, covering about 1 hectare and open to the public on certain days, are famous for their yew trees planted in the 17th century. They are also the emblematic setting for Shakespeare's play Henry VI, where the first quarrel of the Wars of the Roses erupts with the choice of white and red roses, a key moment in English history. Nature itself seems to whisper the secrets of Greater London's past intrigues.
Continue your investigation along King's Bench Walk, a 17th-century Temple street, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666. Lined with Grade II listed Georgian buildings, it takes its name from the King's Bench Court which once sat nearby. Even today, it houses barristers' chambers, perpetuating the legal heritage of the Inns of Court. This approximately 200-meter thoroughfare, typical of the area's architecture, connects you directly to the evolution of English justice from Templar times, marking a transition from chivalry to law.
Finally, your journey concludes near Inner Temple Hall, the main dining hall built in 1572-1574, then rebuilt after the 1941 Blitz, with its Elizabethan timber roof adorned with 52 carved figures. This is where barristers held their banquets since the Templar lands were leased to law students in 1346. This site even hosted royal events, such as Charles I's ball in 1626. You have deciphered the clues, linking the glorious past of the Templars to the legal and royal history of London. The heritage of Greater London, from the Knights Templar heritage to the Inns of Court, is revealed in all its complexity, a Historic England Grade I around every corner.
