In 1348 BC, Pharaoh Akhenaten abandoned Thebes to forge Akhetaten, Tell el-Amarna, a radical new capital devoted solely to the sun god Aten
You are a modern Egyptologist, standing amidst the wind-scoured ruins of Tell el-Amarna, Egypt.
You know that in 1348 BC, Pharaoh Akhenaten abandoned
Akhetaten: City of the Sun, Tomb of the Gods
« Tu es beau, grand, brillant, élevé au-dessus de chaque terre. Tes rayons embrassent les terres jusqu'à la limite de tout ce que tu as fait. »— Extrait du Grand Hymne à l'Aton, attribué au pharaon Akhenaton
In the 14th century BC, Egypt witnessed an unprecedented religious revolution. Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, better known as Akhenaten ('Effective for the Aten'), broke with the powerful priesthood of Amun-Re in Thebes to impose the worship of a single god, the Aten, the sun disk. He founded a new capital, Akhetaten, 'Horizon of the Aten', on a virgin site halfway between Thebes and Memphis. This city became the center of a radically new art and ideology, celebrating light, nature, and a form of artistic realism, under the influence of Queen Nefertiti, whose importance in this revolution is still debated.
Akhenaten's experiment was brief and its end dramatic. After his death, and that of his immediate successor Smenkhkare, the young Tutankhamun, probably his son, restored the worship of the old gods and abandoned Akhetaten. The city was systematically dismantled, temples plundered, monuments destroyed, and the names of Akhenaten and Nefertiti were erased from the annals, branding them as 'the criminal of Akhetaten'. This was the 'Amarna Period', a fascinating and enigmatic interlude, whose profound motivations and consequences remain a subject of intense historical and archaeological debate.

Great two-person format. Narration is dramatic without overdoing it, puzzles are designed to spark conversation. Ideal for new relationships or anniversaries — you discover the city and coordinate on puzzles simultaneously.
Intermittent 4G is plenty. Maps are cached at startup. Narration and clues load per stop, so a so-so signal between stops is fine. GPS itself uses no data.
