In the 7th century heart of the Chenla Empire, King Isanavarman I ruled from Ishanapura, now the haunting Sambor Prei Kuk
You are a seasoned adventurer, a scholar of ancient prophecies drawn by the allure of forgotten power to the heart of Cambodia.
In the 7th century, King Isanavarman I ruled the Chenla
Isanapura, the cradle of Chenla and the legacy of Funan
« “This kingdom is that of Zhenla. Its king is Isanavarman.” »— Chinese annals of the Sui Dynasty, 7th century
Before the splendor of Angkor, the kingdom of Chenla dominated Cambodia, with Isanapura (today Sambor Prei Kuk) as its flourishing capital. Founded in the 7th century by King Isanavarman I, Isanapura was the heart of an empire that succeeded the mythical Funan kingdom, often described in Chinese texts as a powerful maritime empire. The transition from Funan to Chenla marked a shift in power from coastal cities to inland areas, but Funan's cultural and religious legacy, including the cult of Shiva and Indian influence, remained deeply rooted. The temples of Sambor Prei Kuk, with their delicately carved bricks and often octagonal structures, bear witness to this foundational period.
Isanavarman I was a builder and unifier. Under his reign, Chenla expanded, and Isanapura became a major religious and political center. Sanskrit inscriptions discovered at the site glorify Hindu deities and the builder kings, offering valuable insights into the life and beliefs of this pre-Angkorian era. The art of Sambor Prei Kuk, with its dvarapalas (temple guardians) and floral motifs, represents a crucial stage in the development of Khmer aesthetics, laying the foundations for the golden age of Angkor that would follow centuries later. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
