Ayutthaya: The Sun King's Gaze on Siam
« The King of Siam always has the right to be master in his kingdom, and to govern himself according to the laws of his country and his religion. »— Kosa Pan, Siamese Ambassador to the French Court, 1686
In the late 17th century, Louis XIV's France was at the height of its power and influence. The Sun King, a devout Catholic, saw in the distant kingdom of Siam an opportunity for commercial, political, and above all, religious expansion. King Narai, Ayutthaya's enlightened monarch, was interested in European advancements and welcomed foreign emissaries with curiosity, including French Jesuits. This openness was perceived by Versailles as a potential opening for the king's conversion and the establishment of a Christian alliance in Asia.
Several embassies were exchanged between 1680 and 1688. The arrival of the Chevalier de Chaumont in Ayutthaya in 1685 marked the peak of the French offensive, with lavish gifts and alliance proposals. However, despite the pressures, King Narai, advised by his influential Greek minister Constantine Phaulkon, categorically refused to abandon Buddhism. The failure of the conversion and French attempts to establish a military and religious presence led to increasing tensions, culminating in the Siamese Revolution of 1688, the assassination of Phaulkon, and the almost total expulsion of the French from the kingdom, sealing the end of Louis XIV's ambitions in Siam.
