The Sukhothai Kingdom, founded around 1238, marked the birth of the first independent Thai state. It was a period of great prosperity and cultural development. Under the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng (c. 1279-1298), the kingdom reached its zenith, extending over a vast territory and establishing diplomatic and commercial relations with neighboring powers. Ramkhamhaeng is revered as an enlightened ruler, instigator of a just government system and benevolent administration, often described as a 'father' to his people.
Ramkhamhaeng's most enduring legacy is undoubtedly the creation of the Thai alphabet, the 'Phokhun Ramkhamhaeng' (or 'Lik Thai'), in 1292. This script, inspired by Khmer and Indian scripts, was a major innovation, facilitating the recording of laws, religion, and the kingdom's history.
