« Je suis venue en France pour bouter les Anglais hors de France. »— Jeanne d'Arc, interrogatoire à Poitiers, 1429
The Siege of Orléans, which began in October 1428, was a major turning point in the Hundred Years' War. The city, the last stronghold loyal to Dauphin Charles north of the Loire, was vital. Its fall would have opened the way for the English to southern France. It was in this desperate context that Joan of Arc appeared, convinced of her divine mission.
Her arrival in Orléans on April 29, 1429, breathed new morale into the French troops and inhabitants. Less than fifteen days later, on May 8, the siege was lifted, after a series of audacious assaults against English strongholds, the most decisive of which was the capture of the Fort des Tourelles. This victory is celebrated annually in Orléans during the Fêtes de Jeanne d'Arc.
