Your quest in Getaria begins at the foot of the Monument to Juan Sebastián Elcano, erected in 1891 to honor the sole survivor of Magellan's first circumnavigation, completed between 1519 and 1522. This 5-meter-high statue, a work by sculptor Lagart, stands on a small hill in the center of the town, marking the starting point of your journey. Elcano, born in Getaria around 1487, took command of the expedition after Ferdinand Magellan's death in the Philippines in 1521, bringing the ship Victoria back to Spain. The inauguration of this monument coincided with the 4th centenary of the discovery of America, highlighting the importance of his feat in the history of great explorations.
Continue towards the Puerto de Getaria, a historic port active since the Middle Ages, which was the main embarkation point for Getarian navigators. It was from this very port that Juan Sebastián Elcano departed in 1519 for his first voyage with Magellan. The port is naturally sheltered by Monte San Antón, forming a protected bay where ships have found refuge for centuries. The main pier, 250 meters long, testifies to the incessant activity of this place, essential to the maritime development of the Basque Country and the careers of local sailors, including Elcano himself.
The next stop leads you to the Iglesia de San Salvador, a Gothic church built between 1430 and 1550, classified as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Cultural Property of National Interest). Under a tombstone marked with his signature and the date 1526, you will find the tomb of Juan Sebastián Elcano, a place of remembrance for the great explorer. The massive 40-meter-high bell tower, in a typical Basque Gothic style, dominates the Getaria landscape. Inside, a 17th-century Baroque altarpiece dedicated to San Salvador enriches the edifice, offering a glimpse into the sacred art of the region through the centuries.
Then climb Monte San Antón, a small mountain (171 m) forming a natural peninsula, protecting the port of Getaria. This site housed an old 16th-century fortress, with remains of walls and a coastal battery, testifying to its strategic role. From this panoramic viewpoint, you can take in Getaria Bay and the Basque coast, a panorama that has inspired many sailors. Monte San Antón is also legendary for having been a haunt of Basque corsairs in the 16th century, adding a mysterious dimension to your exploration.
Your journey concludes in the Plaza Mayor de Getaria, the historic heart of the town, surrounded by 16th and 17th-century buildings. This former medieval market square, paved with local pebbles, features typical Basque architecture with its cantilevered houses and sculpted coats of arms. The Ayuntamiento de Getaria, housed in a 16th-century Renaissance palace in the Plateresque style, dominates the square. Built around 1550 and classified as a historic monument, it was the former residence of local nobility. By visiting Getaria, you discover the history of the Basque Country and Elcano's life, a legacy that endures in every stone and every street.
