From Desterro to Florianópolis: A Tale of Two Names

Santa Catarina Island, where much of modern-day Florianópolis lies, was originally inhabited by the Carijó people, part of the Tupi-Guarani group, who called it Meiembipe. The first European settlement, Nossa Senhora do Desterro, was founded around 1673 by the bandeirante Francisco Dias Velho. This settlement was strategically important, serving as an outpost in the Portuguese-Spanish territorial wars and a stopover for ships traveling between Rio de Janeiro and the Río de la Plata basin. It gained town status in 1726 and was elevated to a city in 1823.

In the 19th century, the city found itself embroiled in political turmoil. Following a naval revolt against President Floriano Peixoto in 1893, and after supporting the losing side, the city was renamed Florianópolis in 1894, meaning "the city of Floriano," in honor of the president who led the crackdown. This renaming marked a significant shift in the city's identity. Throughout its history, Santa Catarina has seen waves of European immigration, including Azorean Portuguese in the 1750s, Germans starting in 1828, and Italians after 1875, all of whom shaped the region's culture and development.

Connecting the Island: The Hercílio Luz Bridge

For centuries, the island of Santa Catarina relied on ferries to connect to the mainland. This changed with the construction of the Hercílio Luz Bridge, commissioned by then-governor Hercílio Luz to solidify Florianópolis's position as the state capital. Construction began on November 14, 1922, and the bridge was inaugurated on May 13, 1926. At the time of its completion, it was the longest eyebar suspension bridge in the world. Made with approximately 5,000 tons of steel imported from the United States, the bridge was an engineering feat. It was closed for 38 years due to safety concerns and lack of maintenance in 1982, but after extensive restoration, it reopened in 2019, once again becoming a link and a symbol of the city.

• —Praça XV de Novembro — This historic square is the center of Florianópolis's old town. It holds a centuries-old fig tree, a central point for locals and visitors, and is surrounded by historical buildings.
• —Metropolitan Cathedral of Florianópolis — Dedicated to Our Lady of Exile, this cathedral is the primary church in Florianópolis. Its construction began in 1712, with the main structure completed in 1773. It has undergone various architectural alterations over the centuries, maintaining a neoclassical style.
• —Cruz e Sousa Palace — Also known as the "Pink Mansion," this palace, built in the late 19th century, shows a blend of Baroque, Neoclassicism, and Art Nouveau styles. It served as the government palace and residence for Santa Catarina's governors and now houses the Santa Catarina History Museum. Inside, visitors find frescoes, stucco, crystal chandeliers, and parquet floors.
• —Customs House (Prédio da Alfândega) — Built in 1875 in a neoclassical style, this building reflects the area's historical importance as a key point for trade. It stands next to the Public Market, showing the city's commercial past.
• —Florianópolis Public Market — Constructed in 1899 next to the old Customs House, this market is a commercial and cultural hub. It is a place to find fresh seafood, local produce, and handicrafts, and to sample regional dishes in its cafes and restaurants.
• —Hercílio Luz Bridge — This suspension bridge, opened in 1926, was the first permanent link between Santa Catarina Island and the mainland. It is the longest suspension bridge in Brazil and offers views of the city and coastline.

Visit during spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) for mild weather and fewer crowds. Temperatures during these seasons range between 14°C and 26°C. Summer (December to March) is peak season, with temperatures exceeding 28°C, suitable for beaches, but also bringing larger crowds and higher prices. Rainfall is moderate year-round, with January being the wettest month. Winter (June to August) offers cooler temperatures, around 13°C, which is suitable for exploring coastal towns, though not for beach activities. Avoid January and February if you wish to escape the busiest holiday season and potential traffic.

Florianópolis is served by Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN), approximately 25-40 minutes from the main beaches by ride-share. The city is across Santa Catarina Island and the mainland. Public transportation exists, but getting around can be challenging due to the island's size and potential traffic, especially during peak season. The Integrated Transport System (SIMT) bus network covers major areas, but routes can be indirect, and travel times long. A single bus fare is around 4.50 BRL (cash) or 4.38 BRL with a passe rápido card, available at bus terminals. Ride-sharing apps like Uber and 99 are widely available. Renting a car or scooter is an option for greater mobility, especially for exploring the island's 42 beaches. Parking in the historic center near the Public Market is available in private lots, with some street parking requiring payment. The Public Market is open Monday to Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM and Saturdays from 7 AM to 1:30 PM.
