Gold Discovery and Colonial Administration

Minas Gerais, meaning "General Mines," was named for the mineral wealth found in the late 17th century. Gold was discovered in areas like Rio das Velhas around 1695 by Manuel Borba Gato. This led to a gold rush, attracting European immigrants and enslaved Africans. This influx established numerous colonial towns.

In 1720, the Portuguese crown created the Captaincy of Minas Gerais, with Vila Rica (now Ouro Preto) as its capital, to control and tax the gold. A 20% tax, the "royal fifth," was imposed on all extracted gold. Gold from Minas Gerais supported Portugal and contributed to the early Industrial Revolution in Britain. This period lasted over 50 years, influencing the region's architecture, culture, and economy.

Decline of Gold and Economic Transition

By the 1780s, gold production decreased, leading to higher Portuguese taxation and local discontent. This resulted in the Inconfidência Mineira in 1789, an independence conspiracy in Ouro Preto led by Tiradentes. The conspiracy failed but is considered a precursor to Brazil's independence movement. As gold reserves diminished, the region shifted to cattle ranching and, in the 19th century, coffee cultivation.

In the early 20th century, iron ore deposits were found, making Minas Gerais Brazil's leading steel producer and a major manufacturing state. Today, the state's colonial towns, with their preserved Baroque architecture and stone streets, show this history.

• —Old Market (Mercado Velho) — In Diamantina, this market shows local life and commerce. Vendors sell regional products, including local quitanda (cakes).
• —Chica da Silva's House (Casa de Chica da Silva) — In Diamantina, this 18th-century mansion was the home of Chica da Silva, a formerly enslaved woman who gained prominence through her relationship with diamond contractor João Fernandes de Oliveira. The house features traditional Minas Gerais architecture, including pau-a-pique walls and a veranda with muxarabi lattices. It houses collections from the Diamond Museum.
• —Church of Our Lady of Carmo (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo) — In Ouro Preto, this church is an example of Baroque architecture, with cylindrical towers and works by sculptor Aleijadinho.
• —Passadiço (Covered Bridge) — This architectural feature, found in some colonial towns, connected buildings, providing sheltered passage. Its historical use reflects 18th-century urban planning and social customs.

• —Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Anthony of Sé (Catedral Metropolitana de Santo Antônio da Sé) — In Mariana, this cathedral is a religious site, showing the Baroque style common in the region's churches.
• —Arthur Siqueira Square (Praça Arthur Siqueira or Praça do Coreto) — Also known as Bandstand Square, this public space features a bandstand (coreto), a common element in Brazilian town squares for musical performances and social gatherings.

The dry season, from April to October, is the best time to visit Minas Gerais. The weather is milder, less humid, and has less rainfall, making it suitable for exploring historic towns and outdoor activities. Temperatures during this period range from 15°C to 29°C (59°F to 84°F). An arts festival often occurs in Ouro Preto in July.

Avoid the summer months from November to March. This is the rainy season, with heavy downpours and high humidity. While some traditional festivals, like street Carnival, happen then, frequent rain can disrupt travel plans and make sightseeing less comfortable.

Minas Gerais is accessed via Belo Horizonte, the state capital. Tancredo Neves International Airport (CNF) is about 40 kilometers from the city center, serving domestic and international flights. Pampulha Airport (PLU) handles regional flights and is closer, about 8-9 kilometers away. Bus services connect both airports to Belo Horizonte's center.

In historic towns like Ouro Preto and Mariana, walking is the best way to explore stone streets and colonial architecture. Many towns are pedestrian-friendly. For inter-city travel within Minas Gerais, buses are a comfortable option. If driving, roads can be winding in mountainous areas. Parking in historic centers is limited; consider parking on the outskirts and walking. Local markets, such as Belo Horizonte's Central Market, offer regional cuisine and products like cheeses and cachaças.
