From Indigenous Lands to a Military Outpost

Foz do Iguaçu's history is connected to the Iguazu Falls. Archaeological finds indicate human presence in the region as far back as 6,000 BC. The last indigenous groups before European arrival were the Cainganges. In 1542, Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to document the waterfalls, naming them 'Salto de Santa María'.

For centuries, the area remained sparsely populated. A permanent Brazilian settlement began to form in the late 19th century. In 1889, a military colony was established on the border, marking the start of effective occupation. The population was a mix of Paraguayans, Brazilians, Argentinians, Spaniards, and English, primarily involved in yerba mate extraction and timber.

Growth Spurred by Infrastructure

The colony was recognized as Vila Iguaçu on June 10, 1914, with Jorge Schimmelpfeng as its first mayor. The name changed to Foz do Iguaçu in 1918. A moment for the city's future came in 1916 when Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont visited the region. He advocated for the land's appropriation to create a national park, which was established as Parque Nacional do Iguaçu in 1939.

Economic growth arrived in the latter half of the 20th century. The construction of the Friendship Bridge (Ponte da Amizade) in 1965 connected Foz do Iguaçu with Ciudad del Este in Paraguay, making it a trade hub. This was followed by the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant project, a joint Brazilian and Paraguayan undertaking that began in 1971 and launched its first hydro-generator in 1984. These projects, with tourism to the Iguazu Falls, established Foz do Iguaçu as a multicultural city at the Triple Frontier.

• —Iguazu Falls (Parque Nacional do Iguaçu) — The Brazilian side offers views of the 275 cataracts, including the Devil's Throat, from a walkway along the gorge.
• —Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant — This dam on the Paraná River is one of the world's largest hydroelectric plants. Guided tours explain its history and operation, with viewpoints of the dam.
• —Parque das Aves (Bird Park) — Near the entrance to the Iguazu Falls, this park houses tropical birds, butterflies, and other species. Visitors walk through aviaries to see toucans, macaws, and flamingos.
• —Three Borders Landmark (Marco das Três Fronteiras) — This point shows where Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay meet. Each country has an obelisk in its national colors. The Brazilian side offers cultural performances and views of the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers.
• —Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Mosque — Completed in 1983, this mosque serves Foz do Iguaçu's Muslim community. Its architecture offers a look into the city's diverse culture.
• —Chen Tien Buddhist Temple — One of the largest Buddhist temples in Latin America, this temple has 100 Buddha statues and gardens.
• —Peace Square (Praça da Paz) — This central square has a mosaic panel by Miguel Hachen, depicting the fauna and flora of the Iguazu National Park and the indigenous legend of the falls' origin. A water mirror surrounds the mural.

Foz do Iguaçu has a subtropical climate, with warm to hot temperatures year-round. The best time to visit is from May to September. During these months, temperatures are cooler (around 22-27°C or 72-81°F), humidity is lower, and visibility is clearer. This period, considered winter, often has long periods without rain.

Avoid December to February if you dislike intense heat and humidity, as temperatures can reach 32°C (90°F) or higher, with more frequent heavy rainfall. This period also coincides with South American summer holidays, leading to larger crowds at the falls. The rainy season (roughly March-April) can offer maximum water volume at the Iguazu Falls, but expect more spray and mist.

Foz do Iguaçu International Airport (IGU) is 13.3 km (8.3 miles) from the city center. Bus Line 120 connects the airport to the city center (Terminal de Transporte Urbano - TTU) and the Iguazu National Park entrance. The journey to the city center takes about 40 minutes and costs R$ 5.00. Taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber and 99 are also available.

Within the city, public buses are an economical way to travel, with a flat fare of R$ 5.00 per ride. The Urban Transport Terminal (TTU) is the central hub for most bus lines, allowing free transfers within 90 minutes with a Foztrans Único Card. Taxis are metered, and ride-sharing apps are used. The city center is walkable, but major attractions are spread out. A street market takes place every Sunday morning on Avenida Juscelino Kubitschek, from 7:00 a.m. until midday.
