From Pastoral Outpost to Port City

Townsville's origins trace back to the 1860s, driven by the need for a port to serve the pastoral and gold mining industries of inland Queensland. Andrew Ball is credited with being the first European to explore the land where Townsville was founded. The city was established in 1864 by Robert Towns, a Sydney businessman, who envisioned it as a major port for North Queensland. The initial settlement grew, with the foreshore along The Strand developing as a recreational area from the 1860s.

Wartime Significance and Post-War Development

By the early 20th century, Townsville had solidified its role as a regional hub. The Great Northern Railway, with its terminus at the Old Townsville railway station (built between 1910 and 1913 on Flinders Street), was crucial for transporting goods from the interior. This station, a three-storey red brick structure, became a vital transport hub during World War II, moving military personnel and supplies to Pacific War zones. By 1945, Townsville was a garrison city with 90,000 troops stationed there, leading to significant maritime and aircraft activity. The city has continued to evolve, with the Old Townsville railway station closing in 2003 when a new station opened, and the rail tracks through the city centre were subsequently removed.

The park is at the eastern end of The Strand foreshore.

Townsville has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The best time to visit for warm days and clear skies is from May to October. During this dry season, temperatures average between 15-26°C (59-79°F), suitable for outdoor activities. The wet season, from November to April, brings tropical rain, higher humidity, and average daily high temperatures above 30°C (86°F). February is typically the wettest month, with an average of 7.4 inches of rain. The wet season offers lush landscapes, but it is best avoided if you prefer less rain and milder temperatures.

Townsville Airport (TSV) is approximately 7 km from the city centre, a drive of about 10 minutes. A taxi costs around AUD 20, or use a shuttle service connecting the airport to city hotels and the Magnetic Island Ferry Terminal. Public bus route 222 offers an hourly service from the airport to the Breakwater Terminal, taking about 14 minutes and costing around AUD 1.

Townsville has a local bus service operated by Sunbus. Paid parking is available on most inner-city streets like Sturt Street and Flinders Street, with options for 2-hour, 4-hour, and 8-hour parking. Free all-day car parks are at locations such as Aplin Street (south) and Eyre Street. The Townsville Parking app can be used to pay for parking.

Cotters Market, the city's longest-running market, is held every Sunday from 8 am to 1 pm on Flinders Street, offering fresh produce, arts, and crafts. The Strand Night Markets take place on the first Friday of each month at Strand Park, featuring food vans, crafts, and entertainment. On Magnetic Island, the Magnetic Island Markets are open every Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm at Horseshoe Bay Foreshore.
