From Gold Rush Outpost to Tropical Hub

Cairns, known as Gimuy by the Traditional Owners, the Yirrganydji and Gimuy Walubara Yidinji peoples, has a history spanning tens of thousands of years. European contact began in the 1870s with the discovery of gold in the Hodgkinson River goldfields to the north. A port was needed to supply the mining rush, leading to the official establishment of Cairns in 1876. It was named after Sir William Wellington Cairns, then Governor of Queensland.

Cairns was initially a challenging environment, with swampy land prone to flooding and dense rainforest. Settlers worked to clear the land and build infrastructure. The Cairns to Herberton railway line, starting in 1886, was a catalyst for the city's expansion. This engineering project made travel through the difficult terrain easier and attracted immigrants who helped establish the sugarcane industry and fruit orchards. By the early 20th century, as gold mining declined, agriculture, particularly sugar cane, became the economic backbone of the region, attracting a diverse workforce that shaped Cairns' multicultural character.

Wartime Base and Tourism Boom

During World War II, Cairns played a strategic role due to its proximity to the Pacific. It became an important base for Allied forces, with military infrastructure expanding rapidly to support operations in the Coral Sea. This period brought improvements to roads, airfields, and port facilities, laying the groundwork for future growth. After the war, Cairns transitioned from an industrial and agricultural center to a tourism-driven economy. The opening of the international airport in 1984 transformed Cairns into a major international tourist destination and the primary gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

• —Cairns Esplanade Lagoon — An artificial saltwater swimming lagoon that provides a safe place to swim year-round, with sandy edges and grassy areas. It is a central point for locals and visitors, especially due to the presence of crocodiles and stingers in the ocean.
• —Cairns Museum — Housed in the School of Arts building, this museum displays the region's history, from its Indigenous heritage and early European settlement to its development as a tropical city. It contains artifacts, photographs, and stories illustrating the transformations of Cairns.
• —St Monica's Cathedral — This cathedral is known for its stained-glass windows, which depict the creation story and are among the largest themed stained-glass installations in the world.
• —Cairns Regional Gallery — Located in a restored 1936 government building, the gallery features a collection of art, with a focus on art from Far North Queensland, Indigenous art, and touring national exhibitions.
• —Centenary Lakes — Part of the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, these freshwater lakes are a habitat for birdlife and offer walking paths through tropical vegetation. It is a place to observe local flora and fauna, including various waterbirds.
• —Trinity Wharf — A working wharf that provides a view of fishing boats and other vessels. It is also a departure point for some tours and offers views across Trinity Inlet.

Cairns has a tropical climate with two seasons: the dry season (May to October) and the wet season (November to April). The dry season is generally the best time to visit, with clear skies, lower humidity, and average daytime temperatures between 21-25°C. Rainfall is minimal, making it suitable for outdoor activities. This is also peak tourist season, so expect more crowds and higher prices.

The wet season brings higher humidity, frequent afternoon showers, and average daytime temperatures of 29-31°C. It transforms the rainforests into lush landscapes with waterfalls. This is also the season for tropical cyclones, particularly from December through March. Visibility for snorkeling and diving on the Great Barrier Reef can still be good. If you prefer fewer crowds and do not mind humidity and rain, the wet season offers a different experience.

Cairns Airport (CNS) is approximately 6 km north of the city center. You can reach the CBD via airport shuttle services (around $15-$18 per adult one-way), taxis ($25-$35), or rideshare services. There is no direct public bus from the airport, but you can take an Airport Connect shuttle to Sheridan Street and connect to a TransLink bus.

Within Cairns city center, most attractions, cafes, and shops are walkable. For longer distances or exploring beyond the CBD, the local bus network, operated by Sunbus (part of TransLink), is an option, with routes connecting to suburbs and northern beaches. Fares are zone-based, and you can pay with a contactless card or phone, or with cash on the bus. Taxis and rideshare services are available. For exploring areas like the Daintree Rainforest or Atherton Tablelands, hiring a car is recommended as public transport is limited outside the city.
