Visby's Hanseatic Beginnings

Visby's history predates its medieval walls. A Stone Age settlement and port existed around 2000 BCE. By the 9th century CE, foreign traders settled on Gotland island, recognizing its position along Baltic Sea shipping routes between Russia and Western Europe.

By the 10th century, Gotlandic merchants dominated Northern European maritime trade. The town of Visby was established by German merchant-colonists. In 1161, a trade agreement with Lübeck led Visby to become one of the first cities of the Hanseatic League and its primary center in the Baltic Sea. The 12th and 13th centuries were Visby's most prosperous, earning it the title regina maris ("queen of the sea"). During this period, the city developed its own maritime code and minted its own currency.

Fortifications and Decline

The Visby City Wall, or Ringmuren, shows the city's wealth and need for defense. Its oldest part, the Kruttornet (Powder Tower), built between 1160 and 1161, guarded the harbor. It is the oldest surviving non-religious building in Scandinavia. Main fortification began around 1250, driven by the German merchant community. A second phase from 1289 to 1361 raised the wall to its current height of 8 to 11 meters, adding defensive towers. This construction was partly a response to a civil war in 1288 between Visby's merchants and Gotland's farmers. The wall, originally about 3.6 kilometers long with 29 large and 22 smaller towers, still retains approximately 3.44 kilometers, with 27 large and 9 small towers today.

Visby's prosperity declined in the late 13th century. Lübeck's growing power led to Visby losing its Hanseatic privileges in 1299. The Black Death arrived around 1349–50. In 1361, King Valdemar IV Atterdag of Denmark invaded, resulting in a battle outside the city walls where nearly 1,800 defenders were killed and buried in mass graves. Valdemar ordered a part of the wall torn down as a symbol of his conquest, though it was rebuilt in 1363. Visby's subsequent economic decline contributed to the wall's preservation, as the city was spared the modernization that altered many other European cities.

• —Almedalen Park — This green space was once Visby's medieval harbor, now silted up. It is a central park.
• —Stora Torget (Market Square) — The main square of Visby, located near the ruins of St. Catherine's Church. It is a gathering point, particularly in summer, with cafes and restaurants.
• —Sankta Maria Kyrka (Visby Cathedral) — Built by German merchants in the 12th and 13th centuries, this cathedral is the only one of Visby's medieval churches still in active use. Its exterior has ornate sculptures.
• —Saint Catherine's Church Ruin (Sankta Katarina kyrkoruin) — These ruins, with their arches, are a feature on Stora Torget. Construction began in 1233 as a Franciscan monastery.
• —Drotten Church Ruin — Built around 1240 for German parishioners and dedicated to the Holy Trinity, this ruin shows Romanesque architecture with its rounded arches and thick walls. Its original floor plan and columns are visible.
• —Saint Clemens Church Ruin — Dating to the mid-13th century, built on a site that may have held a church from 1060, this ruin was likely used by German merchants. It has vaults and columns.

The period from May through July offers mild weather for exploring Visby. These months have long daylight hours and an active atmosphere. July includes events like Almedalen Week and Stockholm Week. This is also peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. For fewer crowds, October through December are quieter, though the weather will be colder and some attractions may have reduced hours. Avoid winter if you prefer warmer weather and a wider range of open activities.

Travel to Visby typically involves a ferry from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn on the Swedish mainland, a journey of about three hours. Flights are also available to Visby Airport (VBY), 4 km north of the city center, with direct connections from Stockholm and other European cities during summer.

Visby's compact city center is explored on foot; most sights are within walking distance. Bicycles are also used, with rental shops near the ferry terminal. In central Visby, cars are generally not permitted inside the city walls during summer. Public buses operate within Visby and connect to other parts of Gotland; single tickets cost around 20 SEK for adults. Taxis are available.
