Visby 1361: The price of betrayal and blood
« « Hear, Gotland, the call of the horn that heralds your destiny and the judgment of the sword. » »— Anonymous Medieval Chronicle of Gotland
In the 13th and 14th centuries, Visby was the beating heart of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic Sea, a flourishing merchant city whose powerful ramparts protected unparalleled wealth. Merchants from Germany, Russia, and Western Europe met there, exchanging furs, fish, salt, and spices. Its opulent churches and stone houses still bear witness to this era of prosperity and international influence.
This splendor was brutally interrupted on July 27, 1361, when King Valdemar IV Atterdag of Denmark landed on Gotland. After a devastating battle where Gotland's peasant army was annihilated just outside Visby's walls, the city capitulated. Valdemar entered triumphantly, forcing the city to pay a colossal tribute, thus marking the end of Visby's independence and the beginning of its decline, even if the city would retain an important status.
