The Polish Jerusalem Takes Shape

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska's story begins in 1600, when Mikołaj Zebrzydowski, the Voivode of Kraków, envisioned a pilgrimage site. Inspired by descriptions of Jerusalem by Dutch theologian Christian van Adrichem, Zebrzydowski decided to recreate the Holy City's topography in the Lesser Poland region. He commissioned architect and goldsmith Paul Baudarth and Italian Jesuit architect Giovanni Maria Bernardoni to design a complex of chapels and churches spread across the Żar and Lanckorońska hills. The first chapel, dedicated to the Crucifixion, was consecrated in 1601. This project, blending Italian Renaissance and French Baroque garden design with Mannerist architecture, aimed to provide a spiritual journey for those unable to visit the Holy Land itself.

Growth, Fire, and Enduring Faith

The town of Zebrzydów was established in 1617 to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. After Mikołaj's death in 1620, his son Jan Zebrzydowski continued the construction, adding more chapels between 1623 and 1641, including those dedicated to the First Fall of Jesus Christ and several Marian chapels. In 1640, the town was remapped and renamed Nowy Zebrzydów under Magdeburg law. A fire in 1715 destroyed many wooden buildings, necessitating a rebuilding effort by Józef Czartoryski, who also oversaw the construction of the Czartoryski Palace between 1729 and 1731. Despite periods of foreign rule, including annexation by the Habsburg Austrian Empire in 1772, the sanctuary continued to function as a center of Christian worship and a model for other Calvaries in Poland. The town regained its municipal rights in 1934, and after World War II, its economy diversified with a furniture and woodcraft industry.

• —Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels (Bazylika Matki Bożej Anielskiej) — This Mannerist basilica is the central point of the sanctuary. Inside, it contains the painting of Our Lady of Kalwaria, a focal point for Marian devotion.
• —The Kalwaria Paths — These walking routes, several kilometers long, mimic the topography of Jerusalem. They are divided into the Paths of Jesus, depicting scenes from Christ's Passion with 24 chapels, and the Paths of Our Lady, with 11 chapels referencing events in Mary's life. The routes combine natural forest, historical tracks, and over 40 chapels and churches.
• —Ecce Homo Chapel — Built between 1605 and 1609, this chapel has a Greek cross plan and a vault with stucco decorations in the Dutch Mannerist style.
• —Chapel of the Crucifixion — This was the first structure Mikołaj Zebrzydowski built in Kalwaria between 1600 and 1601, marking the start of the complex.
• —Heart of Mary Chapel — Constructed in 1615, this chapel has a heart-shaped plan and commemorates Jesus' encounter with Mary on the road to Calvary.
• —Rajski Square (Plac Rajski) — This square functions as a gathering point in the town. It offers a view of local activity.
• —Góra Żar — This mountain, at the foot of which Kalwaria Zebrzydowska lies, offers walking trails and views of the surrounding Beskids. On its eastern slopes, Golgotha is part of the Sanctuary's paths. The summit holds the ruins of a 14th-century castle of the Dukes of Oświęcim.

Visit Kalwaria Zebrzydowska from late spring to early autumn, generally May through October. During these months, the woodland paths are green and suitable for walking, and the weather is mild. May offers quiet trails, while autumn presents colors, though rain can make dirt paths muddy. Major religious festivities, such as the Passion Plays during Holy Week (Easter) and the Festival of the Assumption on August 15th, draw large crowds. Winter can be atmospheric, but slippery sections on the longer routes can make walking difficult. Avoid heavy rain, as unpaved trails can become very muddy.

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is accessible from Kraków. Regional trains from Kraków Główny take 35 to 60 minutes, stopping at Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Lanckorona train stations. Buses, such as the A40 from Kraków MDA or Kraków Jubilat, reach the town center in about 50 minutes. If driving, a free parking lot is available near the Bernardine Monastery on Lanckorońska Street. The walk from either train station to the monastery is about 1.5 kilometers, with some uphill sections.

Circulating within the pilgrimage park involves significant walking, as chapels are spread across hills and valleys. Paths can be extensive, with some routes taking 2-3 hours. Taxis are available, and ride-sharing services like Uber operate in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska.

The town is known for its furniture manufacturing and woodcraft industry. Trade fairs and furniture exhibitions occur, particularly during spring or summer.
