The Origins of Royal Wines

Tokaj's history is linked to its sweet wines, a tradition over a thousand years old. Grape cultivation in the region is documented as early as the 2nd century AD during the Roman Empire, with a fossilized vine leaf found in Erdőbénye dating to the 3rd century AD. The foundations for modern Tokaj winemaking were established in the 13th century when King Béla IV invited Italian winemakers to restore local vineyards after devastating wars. These new varieties became the basis for Tokaj wines.

The 17th century was a significant period for Tokaj wine, which gained recognition across Europe and was served to royalty like French King Louis XIV. The first written mention of Tokaji Aszú wine dates back to 1571. The region's importance was formally recognized in 1737 when Emperor Charles VI (Charles III, King of Hungary) issued a decree establishing Tokaj as a closed wine region. This made it one of the world's first official appellations, predating Bordeaux's classification by over a century. This decree also classified vineyards into different growths between 1730 and 1772, based on soil, aspect, and noble rot development.

Challenges and Modern Recognition

Tokaj's location, particularly as a crossing point over the Tisza River, meant it was often involved in conflicts. After 1528, the region was under Turkish rule for 170 years. Many of the extensive cellars found today were built during this period, serving as hideouts. In the early 18th century, under the Rákóczi family, viticulture expanded, and regulations for viticulture and winemaking were established in conferences held in 1613 and 1641.

The 19th and 20th centuries brought challenges. The phylloxera epidemic in 1885 destroyed nearly all the old vines. The Treaty of Trianon in 1920 divided the historic region between Hungary and Czechoslovakia. During the Soviet era, wine production was nationalized, prioritizing quantity over quality, which affected the region's traditions. After the political changes in 1989, independent producers began to rebuild. In 2002, the Tokaj wine region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its cultural landscape of historic wine towns, underground cellars carved into volcanic tuff, and viticulture traditions.

Spring (April to June) and fall (September to early December) are also suitable for vineyard tours and tastings, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 24°C. The grape harvest in late September to early October offers a specific atmosphere. Avoid visiting in July and August if you prefer to escape high heat and humidity. The cold season, from late November to late February, sees average daily high temperatures below 6°C. Many smaller producers may be closed during winter.

Tokaj is approximately 245 kilometers (152 miles) from Budapest. It can be reached by car via the M3 motorway to Mezőkövesd, then route 37 through Miskolc, and finally route 38, taking about 3 hours. Direct trains run from Budapest's Keleti station 4-5 times daily, with a change in Miskolc, taking around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Renting a car offers the most flexibility for exploring the wider wine region and neighboring villages like Tarcal and Mád.

The town of Tokaj is small and walkable, taking about 20 minutes to cover end-to-end. Public buses connect major towns, but schedules can be limited. Taxis are an option for reaching other villages in the region. Shops in the countryside typically have shorter opening hours, generally from 8 AM to 4 PM, and most are closed on Sundays. Restaurants usually serve warm food until 9 PM and remain open until 10-11 PM.
