Moorish Seville, Christian Seville — one palace, two souls
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
The Real Alcázar of Seville is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. Built by the Abbadids, enlarged by the Almohads, elevated by Peter the Cruel, its walls carry a thousand years of power, beauty and betrayal.
When Ferdinand III of Castile conquered Seville in 1248, he did not raze the Almohad palace. He moved in. His descendant Peter I, called the Cruel, went further: he invited Nasrid craftsmen from Granada to build a Mudéjar palace of breathtaking beauty at the very heart of the Islamic fortress. The result is a place unique in the world, where Arabic inscriptions praise Allah beneath a roof commissioned by a Christian king.

« "The Alcázar is neither Arab nor Christian. It is Sevillian. And to be Sevillian is to carry both within." »— — In the Alcázar gardens, among the orange trees and fountains, time stands still
The first fortress was built in 913 by the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Rahman III on the ruins of a former Visigothic basilica. The Abbadids, then the Almohads, enlarged it considerably. Seville was then the largest city in al-Andalus, and its alcázar the seat of a power that radiated from North Africa to the Ebro.
After the Reconquista of 1248, the Alcázar became a residence of the Castilian kings. Peter I began construction of the Palacio Mudéjar there in 1364, an absolute masterpiece of Mudéjar art. Craftsmen from Granada, Toledo and Seville worked together, blending Arabic calligraphy, Islamic geometry and Christian heraldry in a synthesis never equalled.
The Catholic Monarchs planned the conquest of Granada here. Charles V celebrated his marriage here. The gardens, extended over the centuries, blend Italian Renaissance and Arab tradition. Today, the King of Spain stays here during his visits to Seville — in a palace whose walls still bear verses from the Quran.
5 stages through the city
