Thomas More's Utopia — realized in Mexico
« Let the Indians live according to their own government and good customs, for they are better than ours »— Vasco de Quiroga, Legal Information, 1535
Born around 1488 in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Vasco de Quiroga arrived in New Spain in 1531 as an oideur of the second Audiencia. Witnessing abuses against indigenous populations, this jurist trained in Salamanca discovered Thomas More's Utopia and found in it a model for reforming colonial society. In 1538, appointed first bishop of Michoacán, he chose Pátzcuaro — sacred city of the Purépechas — as the seat of his diocese rather than Tzintzuntzan, the former Tarascan capital.
Quiroga then founded his famous pueblos-hospitales: Santa Fe de México (1532) and Santa Fe de la Laguna near Pátzcuaro (1535). These utopian communities blended Christian principles with Purépecha social organization. Each family worked six hours a day, goods were held in common, education was mandatory. Artisans specialized by village: copper in Santa Clara del Cobre, lacquer in Uruapan, ceramics in Tzintzuntzan. This system endures today — four centuries after 'Tata Vasco's' death in 1565, the communities he founded continue to practice his traditional crafts.
