The story that haunts this land
Your quest begins in front of the majestic Catedral de Morelia, a baroque edifice constructed from 1640 to 1743, with its neoclassical facade completed in 1774. Its 65-meter towers, among the tallest in Mexico, dominate the Plaza de Armas, founded in 1541. Here, you'll observe the 1888 bandstand, a hub for Sunday concerts, and the central fountain from 1870. This central square, once Valladolid, is an ideal starting point for exploring the colonial monuments of Michoacán, a true Pueblo Mágico.
Continue your investigation at the Palacio de Gobierno de Michoacán, a civil baroque building constructed between 1760 and 1770 on the foundations of a 1574 episcopal palace. Its three levels and 120 rooms have housed the state government since 1821. In its inner courtyard, you'll discover Alfredo Zalce's murals, completed in 1948, powerfully illustrating the history of Michoacán and the independence struggles of the Occidente region.
Your journey then takes you to the Palacio Clavijero, built between 1759 and 1766 as a Jesuit college, before its expropriation in 1767. Its baroque architecture is remarkable, particularly its 14-meter-high sculpted portal.
