The Cornish colony of Mexico
After Mexican independence in 1821, the silver mines of Pachuca and Real del Monte were flooded and abandoned. The Real del Monte Company, a British firm founded by London investors, obtained a 99-year concession in 1824. Engineer Francis Rule arrived with 350 Cornish experts, reputed to be Europe's best miners.
This British community created a true enclave: Cornish-style houses, English cemetery, introduction of cricket and football, pasties becoming Mexican 'pastes'. Cornish steam engines revolutionized mine drainage. Despite technical successes, the company went bankrupt in 1849, but the Cornish legacy definitively marked the region.
