Discovered around 1534, Pachuca quickly becomes one of the most important mining centers of New Spain. Bartolomé de Medina's innovation in 1554 with the mercury amalgamation process revolutionizes silver extraction, making it possible to process lower-grade ores and considerably increase production.
This technique, called the 'patio process', spreads throughout all American mines and becomes the foundation of the Spanish Empire's wealth for three centuries. Pachuca's silver, transported via the Mexico route to Veracruz then Spain, finances European wars and transforms the 16th-century global economy.
