Long before the arrival of Europeans, the region of present-day Shreveport was the territory of the Caddo people, a confederation of Native American nations whose culture flourished around agriculture, fishing, and a complex trade network along the Red River. The Caddo were mound builders, skilled artisans, and astute diplomats, trading with neighboring tribes and early French and Spanish explorers.
