Seneca Falls — Uncover the Hidden Voices

The idea for a women's rights convention took root in 1840, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott were excluded as women from the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London. This affront convinced them of the need for a movement dedicated to women's rights. Eight years later, the fortuitous meeting of Stanton, Mott, Mary Ann M'Clintock, Martha Coffin Wright, and Jane Hunt at a tea party in Waterloo, New York, prompted them to organize a public gathering to discuss the 'social, civil, and religious condition and rights of woman.'

The Seneca Falls Convention, held on July 19-20, 1848, at the Wesleyan Chapel, was the first conference of its kind in the United States. It attracted about 300 attendees, including men like Frederick Douglass. The highlight was the 'Declaration of Sentiments,' a bold document primarily drafted by Stanton, which mimicked the style of the American Declaration of Independence to denounce the injustices suffered by women and demand equality in all spheres, including the right to vote. This text marked the official beginning of the women's suffrage movement in the United States.
