In 118 BC, Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus forged the Via Domitia, the first Roman road in Gaul, transforming Narbo Martius into a thriving colony
You are a young imperial archivist, dispatched by Rome to Narbo Martius in 122 BC.
Your urgent mission: recover a lost codex of Domitius Ahenobar
Immerse yourself in Narbonne, the ancient capital of Gallia Narbonensis, to unearth the forgotten secrets of Domitius Ahenobarbus, the builder of the Via Domitia.
Your quest begins in Narbonne's Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, a central spot in the historic quarter where markets have been held since the 13th century. The City Hall itself was erected between 1338 and 1355 under Archbishop Bernard de la Turlande. This 4,000 m² esplanade, adorned with a monumental fountain installed in 1848, was the scene of public gatherings, including the proclamation of the Republic in 1790. It is here, in the heart of this city of art and history, that the first clues to Domitius Ahenobarbus' codex await you, hidden within the layers of time.
Continue to the Archbishops' Palace, a colossal edifice classified as a Monument historique in 1906, whose construction was initiated in 1272 by Archbishop Gilles Aycelin de Montaigu. Spanning 2 hectares, this episcopal fortress, with its 40-meter-high keep, was the residence of the archbishops until the French Revolution in 1789. It also hosted the Estates of Languedoc from 1525 to 1789. Your investigations will lead you to examine the engraved coats of arms and medieval architectures, potential receptacles of ancient knowledge linked to the Roman heritage of Narbo Martius.
The path then leads you to the Roman Horreum, a warehouse dating from the 1st century AD, an underground vestige of Narbo Martius, capital of Gallia Narbonensis. Its two underground naves, 50 meters long and 8 meters wide, capable of storing 3,000 tons of grain, were excavated in 1835 by Jean-Baptiste Duval and classified as a Monument historique in 1840. It is in these depths that the connection to Domitius Ahenobarbus, consul in 122 BC and founder of the Via Domitia passing through Narbonne, is most palpable. The whispers of the past will guide you to buried clues.
After exploring the Roman vestiges, cross the Pont des Marchands, a 13th-century medieval bridge over the Robine. 90 meters long with 10 arches, it was a former fortified drawbridge. Used until the 19th century for trade, it was restored in 1930 after destructive floods and inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1996 as part of the Canal du Midi. This bridge, a witness to the exchanges that enriched the city of Narbonne, could reveal secret passages or coded messages left by Roman and medieval merchants, perpetuating the spirit of the Via Domitia.
Your journey concludes at the Cathédrale Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur, an unfinished Gothic construction begun in 1272. Its choir, completed in 1350, was consecrated in 1446, and the edifice classified as a Monument historique in 1840. Despite the partial collapse of the vaults in 1325, which led to the abandonment of the nave, its major altarpiece sculpted in 1760 by the Giscardo brothers testifies to its grandeur. As an archivist, you will have followed a thematic circuit in Occitanie, exploring the many facets of Narbonne. This treasure hunt will have allowed you to connect the Roman heritage to the medieval patrimony, offering you a unique understanding of the history of Narbonne and its monuments in Occitanie.
