The village that dressed the king's sails
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Locronan, a perfectly preserved medieval village, produced the sails for the French royal navy. Polanski filmed "Tess" here. Every stone tells the story of the weavers who dressed the king's ships.
Locronan is one of the most beautiful villages in France — and one of the few to have crossed the centuries without being disfigured. Its central square, surrounded by Renaissance granite mansions, hasn't changed since the 17th century. The reason for this preservation? The wealth of weavers who made sail cloth for the royal navy — fabrics so renowned they outfitted Louis XIV's ships. When the manufactory closed, the village froze in time. Your mission: find the weavers' manufacturing secret, hidden somewhere in the village.
« "Locronan is a miracle of stone — an entire village that fell asleep in the 17th century and never woke up." »— — Guide to Finistère, 19th century
Locronan owes its name to Saint Ronan, an Irish monk who settled here in the 5th century. But it was fabric that made its fortune. From the 15th century, Locronan's weavers produced hemp cloth of exceptional quality. In the 17th century, the East India Company and the royal navy placed orders — the sails of Louis XIV's ships came from this small Breton village's workshops.
The weavers' wealth is written in stone: the Renaissance mansions surrounding the central square, the priory church with its Pénity chapel housing Saint Ronan's tomb, and the manors scattered in the surrounding countryside all testify to remarkable prosperity.
When the royal navy turned to other suppliers, Locronan declined and froze. What could have been a catastrophe became a blessing: the village crossed the centuries intact. Roman Polanski chose it in 1979 to film "Tess," transforming the square into a Victorian England set. The Grande Troménie, a millennial procession around Locronan hill, perpetuates Saint Ronan's memory every six years.
