Druids, witches and George Sand
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
The Berry is France's land of witchcraft. George Sand, who lived there her entire life, documented the ancestral druidic rites that still survived in the 19th-century countryside. From the Pierres Jaumâtres to the frescoes of Vic, traces of the ancient cults are everywhere.
George Sand's house in Nohant is a world unto itself — an estate where the greatest woman of letters of the 19th century received Chopin, Liszt, Delacroix and Balzac. But Sand was not merely a society writer. She was a passionate ethnographer of her native Berry, documenting the beliefs, rites and superstitions of a peasant world where vestiges of druidism mingled with Catholicism. Her pastoral novels — The Devil's Pool, The Master Pipers — are treatises on rural sorcery disguised as fiction.

« "There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved." »— — George Sand, Correspondence, 1862
The Berry is one of the oldest provinces of France — its name comes from the Bituriges, a Gallic people whose capital was Avaricum (Bourges). The druids were particularly powerful there, and their rites survived much longer than elsewhere. Until the 19th century, Berry peasants practiced healing, protection and divination rituals directly inherited from Celtic traditions.
George Sand (1804-1876), born Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, grew up and lived in Nohant. This free woman — who wore trousers, smoked cigars and took famous lovers — was also a meticulous observer of the rural world. In her novels and notebooks, she describes "sorcerer millers," "bone-setters," Midsummer fires, sacred springs and power stones. Her "Black Valley" — the landscape between Nohant and La Châtre — was considered a place of witchcraft.
The Pierres Jaumâtres, natural granite stacks on Mont Barlot, were a druidic place of worship. The church of Vic, steps from Nohant, has 12th-century Romanesque frescoes — among the finest in France — where Christian scenes overlap with pagan symbols. The village of Gargilesse, rated among the most beautiful in France, was Sand's favorite retreat — she wrote there in a peace disturbed only by the ghosts of Berry.
5 stages through the city
The gameplay: AR, camera, hidden clues
At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you. When you find it, the phone vibrates, an AR chest opens and reveals your answer fragment. 8 stops, 8 clues to find with the camera, 1 final code.
The stops on your route are a surprise. You'll discover them one by one, guided by your phone, starting from the meeting point.
