In 781 CE, a limestone monument was erected in Chang'an (modern Xi'an) to celebrate 150 years of hidden Christianity flourishing in imperial China

Emperor Taizong has tasked you to decipher the sacred scriptures and hidden steles of
Uncover the messages carved in Xi'an's stone, where China's millennia-old history reveals an unexpected chapter: that of Nestorian Christianity.
Your quest for the steles begins at Xi'an's Bell Tower, built in 1384 during the Ming Dynasty. Standing 36 meters high with a base diameter of 35 meters, it announced the time and official events until the 20th century. Just 300 meters north, Xi'an's Drum Tower, erected in 1380, housed a 2-meter diameter drum, struck 21 times at midnight. These central Xi'an edifices set the city's rhythm, a convergence point for trade and cultural routes, testifying to the imperial grandeur that saw Alopen and Nestorian Christianity arrive in China.
500 meters west of the Towers, you explore the Great Mosque of Xi'an, founded in 742 under the Tang Dynasty. This mosque is the oldest in China, and its 12,000 m² area spread over four courtyards offers a unique architectural blend of Chinese and Islamic styles. This site is a striking example of the Tang Dynasty's religious tolerance, under which Emperor Taizong authorized the arrival of Nestorian Christianity in 638, allowing Alopen to establish and spread his faith in the capital, reflecting the city's cultural openness to foreign religions.
Your journey then takes you to the Xi'an City Wall, built between 1370 and 1398 during the Ming Dynasty. With a perimeter of 13.74 km, a height of 12 meters, and a width of 15 to 18 meters, these are the best-preserved city walls in China. The South Gate (Yongning), located 2 km south of the Towers, is visible on your route and symbolizes the entrance to this historic city. These massive fortifications protected the city that was the birthplace of Nestorian Christianity, whose history is documented on the Nestorian Stele of 781 at the Forest of Steles Museum.
Although the Wild Goose Pagoda was destroyed in 1556, you head towards the Daci'en Temple (Grand Temple of Cien), founded in 652 under the Tang by Emperor Gaozong in memory of his father Taizong. This temple was the original site of the pagoda, historically linked to the Tang steles you will discover. Located 4 km south, this sacred place illustrates Xi'an's spiritual richness and the imperial patronage that fostered the emergence of various doctrines, including Nestorianism, whose history is carved into the stone of the Forest of Steles Museum.
Your quest culminates at the Xi'an Forest of Steles Museum, founded in 1087 in the Confucian Wenmiao temple to preserve Tang steles. This Chinese national monument houses a collection of 2300 steles covering dynasties from Han (206 BC) to 1911. The centerpiece is the Nestorian Stele of 781, which documents the arrival of Nestorian Christianity in China in 635. As a commissioned archivist, you decipher the millennial inscriptions, understanding the importance of this Tang calligraphic heritage and the legacy left by figures like Sima Qian, whose works are engraved on Han steles, or the monk Alopen who marked Xi'an's history.
