Oak Alley — Decipher the Planter's Conspiracy

The history of Oak Alley, famous for its iconic alley of 28 live oaks, is intrinsically linked to Louisiana's golden age of sugar. Founded in the early 19th century, the plantation took its current form when Jacques Télésphore Roman, a wealthy French Creole, acquired the property in 1836. He had the majestic Greek Revival mansion built in 1839, while the oak alley, planted a century earlier, became the jewel of the estate, leading from the Mississippi River to the main house. This period of prosperity heavily relied on the forced labor of enslaved people, who cultivated vast sugarcane fields, transforming Louisiana into a major player in the global sugar economy.

After the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, the plantation economy collapsed. Oak Alley experienced a period of decline and changed hands several times. In 1925, Josephine Stewart and her husband Andrew purchased it. Josephine, passionate about history and restoration, undertook a vast project to restore the plantation to its former glory, even installing electricity and plumbing. Thanks to her efforts, Oak Alley was designated a National Historic Landmark and transformed into a museum, opening its doors to the public in 1972, thus preserving the testimony of a complex and often painful era of American history.
