Brocéliande — the enchanted forest of Arthurian legends
The forest of Brocéliande — now called the Paimpont forest — is the beating heart of Arthurian legend in Brittany. Chrétien de Troyes in the 12th century set several episodes of the Knights of the Round Table here. The monk Robert de Boron placed Merlin's tomb and Viviane's dwelling here.
Merlin, the most powerful enchanter, made the mistake of teaching all his secrets to Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, with whom he was desperately in love. She used his own spells to trap him beneath a stone — or inside a tree, depending on the version — for eternity. They say his spirit still inhabits the forest.
Morgane, half-sister of King Arthur, created the Val sans Retour to trap unfaithful knights. Only Lancelot, whose love for Guinevere was pure, could break the enchantment. Today, the forest preserves all these sites — Barenton fountain, Merlin's tomb, Val sans Retour — and visitors sometimes swear they hear whispers among the oaks.
