Savannah Historic District — Oglethorpe's Hidden Code

🎭Your Mission

You are a contemporary historical researcher, intrigued by Savannah's founding in 1733, and you've just received an anonymous tip about General James Oglethorpe's hidden codes.

Oglethorpe — the Enlightenment surveyor and his social chessboard

« The town was laid out in wards, each consisting of forty lots for houses, and four squares, left open for markets and other conveniences. »
James Oglethorpe, lettre au Board of Trustees, mars 1733

The Geometric Utopia of Savannah

On February 12, 1733, James Edward Oglethorpe landed with 114 colonists on the south bank of the Savannah River. A philanthropist, prison reformer, and member of the British Parliament, he dreamed of creating a model colony for English debtors and European religious refugees. His revolutionary urban plan drew inspiration from Enlightenment theories: regularly spaced public squares, surrounded by standardized residential lots, created perfect geometry designed to foster social equality and common prosperity.

Each ward comprised four tithings of ten residential lots, organized around a central square of sixty feet by sixty feet. Trust lots, reserved for public and religious buildings, bordered the east and west sides of each square. This rigorous geometric organization reflected the ideals of the era: order, reason, and social harmony. Oglethorpe banned slavery, limited property sizes, and encouraged the silk industry, dreaming of an egalitarian society unique in colonial America.
